The 424s are coming

I just had to dial the new (424) area code for the first time while making some location scouting phonecalls. Last month, Creative Artists Agency (CAA) moved from Beverly Hills to Century City, so their new phone has changed to 424-288-2000.
This is the newest area code in California, made mandatory on 26 August 2006. The (424) area code is an overlay of the (310) area code for Malibu, Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach, San Pedro, and much of the rest of the Westside and South Bay.
I kinda like the new area code! It shares a nice middle consonance with nearby (323) in Hollywood and (626) in Pasadena, and it’s not an ugly number like (951) in Riverside and, especially, (562) in Long Beach. Poor Long Beach. You’re too nice a city to have such a horrible area code number.

I think there’s something very tough and macho about “562.” Numbers like “323″ and “424″ are awfully precious.

That’s definitely an interesting point about numbers like that being macho. And you’re right too about the (x2x) numbers being precious because most of them are already taken…. (121) and (222) can’t exist in the current U.S. phone system. (323), (424), and (626) are now claimed in Los Angeles County. (727) is in St. Petersburg, Florida, and (828) is Asheville, North Carolina. That just leaves (525) and (929) as unclaimed. So far!
